Target: Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno
Goal: To applaud Alderman Joe Moreno for advocating for marriage equality
Following anti-gay remarks by Chick-fil-A’s president Dan Cathy, Alderman Joe Moreno has decided to block the restaurant from opening a restaurant in his neighborhood. Tell Alderman Joe Moreno that you support his decision to stand up for LGBT rights.
Chick-fil-A has received much criticism for its support of anti-gay organizations. According to a report by Equality Matters, Chick-fil-A donated a total of nearly $2 million to Exodus International, the Marriage & Family Foundation, and several other organizations opposed to LGBT equality in 2010. In a recent statement to the Baptist Press, Cathy acknowledged that he was a staunch supporter of “traditional marriage.” Cathy even claimed that supporters of marriage equality were “inviting God’s judgment.”
Chick-fil-A has lost other supporters as well. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has recently sent a letter to Cathy urging the president not to open a franchise in the city. The Jim Henson Company has also ended its partnership with the fast food chain.
Some conservative politicians view Chick-fil-A’s “values” differently. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has created a “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” event on his Facebook page. Huckabee invites everyone who supports businesses that operate on Christian principles to eat at Chick-fil-A on Wednesday, August 1st. As of now, more than two-hundred thousand people claim they will be attending the event. Senator Rick Santorum has tweeted that he will also be attending the event.
Many claim that Moreno’s decision is a violation of Cathy’s first amendment rights. Indeed, freedom of speech allows Cathy to publicly voice his own opinions. However, that does not entitle him to run his company with an anti-LGBT agenda. As Moreno said, “They should be in the business of selling chicken, not promoting a political philosophy.”
Please thank Chicago alderman Joe Moreno for standing up for equality by signing the petition below.
Dear Alderman Joe Moreno,
Thank you for blocking Chick-fil-A from expanding into Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood. Chick-fil-A’s anti-gay political philosophy is unacceptable, especially in a diverse city like Chicago. We appreciate your decision to stand up for equality, even in the face of controversy and disapproval.
Anti-gay organizations do not belong in a diverse city such as Chicago. Not only would Chick-fil-A’s homophobic attitudes negatively impact the LGBT community, they would also send the wrong message to Chicago’s residents.
Thank you for standing up against intolerant organizations. Please continue to fight organizations that do not represent Chicago’s values of diversity and tolerance.
