Urge Trader Joe’s to Only Sell Antibiotic-Free Meat

meat counter

Target: CEO of Trader Joe’s, Dan Bane

Goal: Only sell meat that has been raised without any antibiotics in Trader Joe’s stores.

Outbreaks of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella have become more numerous each year, causing more and more people to search for food products that will not have negative consequences for their health or the environment. As a large supermarket chain with high standards for the food they sell, Trader Joe’s has the power and the responsibility to effect change in the current food system by committing to only sell meat that has been raised without antibiotics.

Currently, over 80% of all antibiotics sold in the U.S. are going directly into livestock feed. Big agriculture companies keep a steady trace of antibiotics in farm animals’ food to prevent disease in the crowded, unsanitary conditions they keep the animals. The consequence of constantly using antibiotics is that antibiotic-resistant bacteria can develop and remain in the animals’ tissues. When consumers buy and eat this contaminated meat, they can get seriously ill.

A recent survey found out that 86% of Americans would rather buy meat raised without antibiotics. Whole Foods Market has already committed to only sell meat that comes from farms that do not use antibiotics. Now is the time for Trader Joe’s to live up to its progressive standards and commit to only selling meat that has been raised without antibiotics.

Sign the petition below to encourage CEO of Trader Joe’s, Dan Bane, to be a leader in the healthy food revolution by ensuring the meat sold at his supermarket is safe and antibiotic-free.
