Protect San Francisco’s Gay Heritage: Save the Eagle Tavern

Rainbow

Target: Mayor of San Francisco Edwin Lee

Goal: To preserve the site of the Eagle Tavern, a historic gay bar in San Francisco.

The Eagle Tavern in San Francisco’s SOMA neighborhood was a quirky yet diverse gay bar where many members of the LGBT community could gather and feel accepted and welcomed. Even though the bar is no longer open, it remains a strong memory and a place with much history for the LGBT community.

Recently, a non-LGBT group of entrepreneurs has been discussing plans to take over the site.  Many people feel like there was no outreach to the gay community with regard to their opinions on the future of the site of the Eagle Tavern. Now, groups like the Harvey Milk Club are petitioning to save this historic site, which is a community icon for LGBT residents.

The Eagle Tavern serves as a symbol of the struggles the city of San Francisco faced during the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The ashes of gay men and women who died from the disease have been scattered there. This landmark has special meaning to the community and they are against having a non-queer group take it over. Supporters of the petition to save the tavern feel as if the gay community should have been consulted first.  Many feel that the building’s future should represent what it once was and still is to some LGBT people: a community historic site.

This landmark deserves to be remembered for its significance and importance. Sign this petition to support the saving of the Eagle Tavern, and urge Mayor Ed Lee to name it as a historical site.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mayor Edwin Lee,

I am writing to ask you to save the Eagle Tavern and name it as an historical site. Although the Tavern is now closed, its importance and significance within the gay community makes it a landmark that deserves to be saved. Many in the LGBT community feel that the bar served as a meeting place for people of all backgrounds and a community center where everyone could be accepted.

I would like to see the tavern reopened, or at least changed into something that would support and show the history of the gay community. The Eagle Tavern was a symbol of San Francisco’s struggle during the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the ashes of gay men and women who died from the disease are even scattered there. That fact alone makes the place seem sacred, and holds much meaning for the queer community. Don’t let any businesses or entrepreneurs interfere with the significance of this landmark. Support the gay community and save the Eagle Tavern.

Sincerely,
