Demand Gender Pay Equality at the BBC

Target: Tony Hall, BBC Director General

Goal: Close the BBC’s gender pay gap.

The world’s oldest public broadcaster was just forced to release its internal salary figures, and the numbers aren’t good. The figures appear to show a massive disparity between the pay packages of male and female employees.

Two thirds of BBC employees earning over £150,000 (roughly US$195,000) yearly are male and white. Of these, the biggest wage went to Top Gear presenter Chris Evans, who made more than £2 million (US$2.6 million) yearly. Comparatively, the highest paid female star, Claudia Winkleman, made four times less than Evans.

The revelations have already sparked a protest letter from 42 prominent women at the BBC, demanding the broadcaster fix its pay disparity. If you agree, please sign this petition demanding equality at the BBC.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Hall,

As one of the world’s most respected news outlets, the BBC should be a role model for journalists everywhere–including in terms of gender equality. Unfortunately, it isn’t. The recently released wage data for the BBC’s top earners reveal a grim reality of gender inequality.

Two thirds of top earners at the BBC are men, and the top male star earns four times that of his female counterpart. It’s no surprise, therefore, to see the BBC’s critics accusing the broadcaster of running a “boy’s club,” where the work of women isn’t valued as much as that of men.

To be sure, the BBC is far from alone; much of the international media world suffers from a wage gap. However, as a world leader in journalism and as a taxpayer-funded resource, the BBC has an obligation to uphold. Close the pay gap, and close it now.

Sincerely,
