Oppose Extreme 20 Week Abortion Ban for D.C. Women

protect women's health

Target: U.S. House of Representatives

Goal: Oppose the extreme and unconstitutional 20 week abortion ban that would affect women in Washington, D.C.

On Wednesday, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee passed a bill that would make abortions illegal after 20 weeks of pregnancy for Washington, D.C. women. This bill is an attack on Washington’s ability to self-govern, sets an artificial marker that is not supported by science, and does not make exceptions for cases of life-threatening conditions, rape or incest. Tell the U.S. House of Representatives to oppose this extreme and unconstitutional bill.

Representative Trent Franks (R-AZ) introduced H.R. 3803, the “D.C. 20 Week Abortion Bill” back in May. This bill represents an unprecedented attack on Washington’s ability to self-govern, since it would directly change current district law. To make matters worse, at the markup hearing Rep. Franks silenced and denied Washington’s only voice in Congress, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), the opportunity to testify on the bill that would only affect the District’s women.

In addition, the bill is unconstitutional because it goes against Roe v. Wade, which guarantees the right to have an abortion until the fetus is viable outside the womb. It is unjust and insensitive, as it lacks an exception for cases of rape, incest and the health of the mother, denying any Washington woman access to a medically necessary abortion, even if she is experiencing psychological trauma or life-threatening complications due to her pregnancy.

Finally, the bill is absolutely unscientific, as it sets an artificial line to ban abortions at 20 weeks. The bill’s extremist sponsor says the 20 week ban is based on medical evidence that fetuses can feel pain at that point. But the American College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians, when asked about the fetal pain remark, stated that it “knows of no legitimate scientific information that supports the statement that a fetus feels pain.”

The D.C. 20 Week Abortion Ban bill is a cynical distraction to make an ideological point during an election year and to avoid more pressing issues, such as the state of our economy and our education. Rep. Frank and his cohorts must stop playing politics with women’s health. Sign the petition below to urge Congress members to vote against this extreme and unconstitutional bill.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Members of Congress,

I am writing to urge you to vote against Representative Trent Frank’s extreme and unconstitutional “20 Week Abortion Ban” bill, H.R. 3803. This bill represents an unprecedented attack on Washington, D.C.’s ability to self-govern, since it would directly change current district law. Since D.C.’s only voice in Congress, Delegate Eleanor Norton, was silenced and denied the opportunity to testify during the markup, Rep. Frank is directly infringing on the liberty of Washington residents by taking away their right to choose what is best for them.

H.R. 3803 is a cynical distraction to make an ideological point during an election year and to avoid more pressing issues, such as the state of our economy and our education. Rep. Frank and his cohort must stop playing politics with women’s health.

I strongly encourage you to do all you can to stop this extreme and unconstitutional bill from becoming law.

Sincerely,
