Reject Trump Administration Attempt to Punish Climate Scientist

Target: Adam Miles, Acting Special Counsel, Office of the Special Counsel

Goal: Restore senior federal scientist who was reassigned for political considerations to former position.

The Trump Administration transferred a senior Interior Department scientist for publicly criticizing weakening of protections for Native Americans. This may have violated legal statutes protecting federal whistleblowers from retaliation and continues a pattern of isolating scientists who speak out against administration policies.

Joel Clement, director of the Office of Policy Analysis, stated he was removed from his post after voicing concerns regarding inadequate federal action to protect Native American communities from climate change impact. Department of Energy Secretary Ryan Zinke foreshadowed this action by admitting during his confirmation hearing that involuntary transfers would be utilized to encourage staff reduction.

Federal climate science efforts have been under constant assault in the Trump era. This includes massive proposed budgetary cuts to the EPA, withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, dissolution of environmental impact committees, removal of climate change data from official websites and restricting federal employees from using “climate change” in official communications.

We cannot allow federal scientists to be marginalized, isolated or threatened for speaking out against the above attacks. Please sign the below petition urging the Office of Special Counsel to send a clear message of defiance by restoring Joel Clement to his previous position.

Dear Special Counsel Miles,

I am writing to urge that you restore Joel Clement as director of the Office of Policy Analysis at Department of Interior. As you are aware, he was involuntarily reassigned for speaking out against weakening of federal protections for Native Americans from climate change impact. This is the latest example of an assault on climate science efforts by the Trump Administration.

Legal statutes protect federal employees from facing retribution for publicly voicing their concerns. You have an opportunity to send a clear message that the Trump Administration may not threaten or isolate internal critics of their anti-science agenda.
