Target: Fred Jackson, news director for the American Family Association
Goal: To issue an apology for claiming that pro-equality churches and the liberal media were responsible for the Colorado movie theater shooting.
During a time when the American public should be standing together, there exist people like Fred Jackson, the news director for the American Family Association, who try to tear people apart. After hearing of the tragic shooting in Aurora, Colorado during which 12 people were killed and 59 more were injured in a movie theater by shooter James Eagan Holmes, Jackson proceeded to blame churches who supported gay rights, the liberal media, and the general lack of the fear in God for the catastrophe.
These utterly false and insolent remarks were made over the American Family Association’s radio station called AFA Today. Jackson stated, “I have to think that all of this, whether it’s the Hollywood movies, whether it’s what we see on the Internet, whether it’s liberal bias in the media, whether it’s our politicians changing public policy, I think all of those somehow have fit together…. I have to say also churches who are leaving the authority of Scripture and losing their fear of God, all of those things have seem to have come together to give us these kinds of incidents.” In other words, according to Jackson, people who support equality are somehow responsible for the awful slaughter of 12 innocent people. According to him the cause is simply, “mankind shaking its fist at the authority of God.”
The American Family Association, once called the National Federation of “Decency”, undoubtedly approved of Jackson’s hateful and bigoted comments considering that among their many action statements, one of them reads: “to promote virtue by upholding in culture that which is right, true and good according to Scripture”. Religious motives or not, the blame Jackson put on innocent people and groups was uncalled for and highly inappropriate during a time when the nation should be uniting for the sake of families and friends of the deceased. Sign the petition now to demand an apology from this hateful man, and request that he keep his mouth shut in the wake of tragedy from now on.
Dear Fred Jackson,
I could not be more outraged and offended over your remarks regarding who was to blame for the recent movie theater shootings in Aurora, Colorado. On the American Family Association talk show, AFA Today, you stated that the reason 12 people were killed and 59 more were injured was because of the liberal media, a lack of fear in God, and churches that support equality. According to you, the cause for the tragedy is simply “mankind shaking its fist at the authority of God.”
You have the right to have different beliefs than the rest of the world, but I find that you chose to express them at a highly inappropriate time. Not only did you unnecessarily blame innocent groups, your statements were completely false and unfounded. Your belief that the tragedy was caused by churches that support equality, the liberal media, and the lack of fear of God is a slippery slope fallacy and a hollow argument that is only backed by your prejudiced and homophobic beliefs.
Because you obviously failed to tune into reliable new sources, let me inform you that the cause of the Colorado theater shooting was a mentally sick man by the name of James Holmes. It is he, and not anybody else, who is to blame for what happened. Please do not suggest otherwise by making such offensive remarks again. I urge you instead to reach out to grieving family members and friends of those who senselessly lost their lives. You will find that doing so accomplishes much more than blaming innocent people.
