Change Cows’ Diets to Combat Global Warming

Target: Rick Smith, President and CEO, Dairy Farmers of America

Goal: Urge dairy farmers to look into feeding seaweed to cattle as a way to reduce methane gas emissions.

The rising demand for animal products such as milk has fueled an increase in greenhouse gas emissions, of which methane is one of the worst culprits. Cattle farming in particular is known to contribute a significant percentage of methane pollution worldwide. That’s why Irish farmers are beginning to embrace research which has shown that supplementing a cow’s diet with 2 percent seaweed can reduce their methane emissions by as much as 99 percent.

While feeding seaweed to cows will not solve the many ills and negative environmental impacts associated with cattle farming, in particular with large factory farms, it may be a simple way to reduce the industry’s negative environmental impact while we continue to work on reducing meat and dairy consumption worldwide. As seaweed grows quickly, it can be sustainably and cheaply grown in coastal areas, making it an ideal way to combat a natural side effect of the cow’s digestive cycle.

At this time of global climate crisis, we should urge the agricultural industry to do what it can to reduce its carbon footprint wherever possible. Sign this petition to tell the Dairy Farmers of America to begin urging farmers to supplement their cows’ diet with seaweed to help reduce the harmful effects of methane.

Dear Mr. Smith,

Dairy farming is a major source of methane pollution worldwide due to the amount of gas that cows produce daily. One possible way to reduce the impact that these cows have on the environment may be to supplement their diets with seaweed. In recent studies, it was shown that cows’ methane emissions were reduced by 99 percent when they were given a diet which included 2 percent seaweed.

While adding seaweed won’t be a ‘silver bullet’ to save the planet, it may be a step in the right direction. I urge you to advise farmers to begin using this supplementation in addition to any other measures which would help reduce the environmental impact your industry has.

  1. Jenna Miles says:

I have a better idea: stop breeding cows.

  2. Just stop eating cows and meat and there will be no demand for cows and no methane emissions.

  3. Gen Lovyet Agustsson says:

no more demands! cows are designed to eat grass!

  4. Nicolás Caballero Mühlbach says:

Go vegan if you are worried about global warming ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
