Target: Target Corporation
Goal: To applaud the retail company for supporting marriage equality.
Target recently joined the list of many corporations that support the end of marriage segregation when they stocked their shelves with wedding cards for gay couples. Sold under the headings of “For two special men” and “Two special women,” the cards are made by Carlton Cards, a branch of American Greetings, and are already receiving both positive and negative feedback from the public. Carlton Cards spokeswoman Patrice Sadd stated that Target and American Greetings worked together in order to offer “wedding cards relevant for everyone.” In other words, despite the fact that several Target customers are unhappy that their personal and religious beliefs cannot be thrust upon everyone in the nation, Target is taking a stance for equality.
In addition to selling same-sex congratulatory wedding cards, the Minnesota-based company began to sell gay pride t-shirts on their website. As much as $12,000 of the profits from these shirts is to be donated to the Family Equality Council, an organization that, according to their mission statement, is dedicated to “changing attitudes and policies to ensure all families are respected, loved, and celebrated – especially families with parents who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.”
Target’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer Michael Francis stated, “Target is not anti-gay. It’s important to set the record straight and provide some context.” In other words, the corporation has certainly come a long way since last year, when Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel gave $150,000 to an independent political fund called MN Forward, a group created to support anti-gay Republican governor nominee Tom Emmer. Applaud Target for getting with the times and for finally dedicating itself to ending marriage segregation once and for all.
Dear Target Corporation,
In light of your recent decision to sell wedding cards for gay couples in stores and gay pride t-shirts online, I personally want to thank you for supporting the end of marriage segregation. It is crucial for same-sex marriage to be supported in this day and age, and the more strength the movement has, the better. Too many corporations are using their status to advance their religious and personal agendas without regard to the fact that civil rights are rights and cannot be voted on. Thank you for having the courage to support equality.
Successful retail businesses such as Target have a huge impact on the market and the economy, and anti-gay consumers that shop at your stores will soon understand that their hateful ways are coming to an end. It is a blow to their religious motives when corporations take a stance against judgement and hate, and by supporting such a crucial civil right, the time same-sex marriage is made legal everywhere may come sooner than we think.
Please continue to support marriage equality, and to show my gratitude, I will continue to give you my business.
