Stop Executing People for Committing Petty Crimes

Target: Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda

Goal: Stop violently executing nonviolent, petty criminals.

Nearly 40 people were were brutally executed by authorities in Rwanda in 2016 for simply committing petty crimes. Stealing produce and using illegal fishing nets were among some of the charges these victims were executed for. None of these crimes warranted death. We must act now to stop unnecessary executions.

The violent actions by Rwandan officials are not a means of ending crime or reforming society. Instead, they are the actions of an authoritarian regime attempting to spread fear. The victims were not executed by hanging or injection but by beatings and stabbings.

The horrific events are not the only violence perpetrated by Rwandan officials. Political opponents have also been tortured and executed. Sign the petition and demand that the Rwandan government not fight crime with murder but with laws, as any democratic nation would do.

Dear President Kagame,

Over the past 12 months, nearly 40 people have been executed for simply committing petty crimes. Men who have done as little as steal produce have been punished with a fate most societies reserve only for murderers.

This violence must end. It will not bring crime to an end in Rwanda. Instead, it will only breed fear. I ask that more civilized measures are enacted to bring crime to an end because violent bloodshed surely won’t work.
