Target: Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
Goal: Commend action of being the first House Republican to speak out in support of marriage equality
In the past few months, challenges to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the bill which federally defines marriage as existing only between one man and one woman, have been mounting. To protect the bill, which is under fire from Democrats, legal cases, and several big-name companies, House Republicans are in the process of mounting a defense of DOMA for when the issue inevitably comes to a vote before the House and Senate once more. Although many Democrats, including President Obama, have come out and stated their official opposition to DOMA, not even the most open-minded of Republican Congressmembers or Senators have done so: until now.
Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida has recently verified her official support of marriage equality in a statement to the Washington Blade newspaper. Having been the sole Republican cosponsor for a bill aimed at repealing DOMA back in September, Ros-Lehtinen’s official vote of support is not surprising, but it is extremely admirable. Her decision to step across party lines sets an example and a standard for House Republicans and all others that marriage equality is about more than politics. In time, it may provide a path for future Republican Congressmembers to do the same.
Write to Representative Ros-Lehtinen and let her know that you appreciate her actions, and hope that she will continue to speak up on issues of marriage equality without regard to her party’s official policy.
Dear Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen,
I am writing to applaud your bravery and passion in being the first Republican to officially speak out against the Defense of Marriage Act and in support of marriage equality. As Republican leadership in the House prepares to mount a legal defense of DOMA, despite multiple cases pointing to its unconstitutionality, your act of stepping across party lines to support equality demonstrates clearly that this issue is about more than one’s general political beliefs.
As the first Republican to speak out against DOMA, you have set an example and blazed a trail that many may look to follow in the future. Thank you for your support, and I hope that you will continue to support marriage equality and related issues regardless of your party’s official stance on them.
