Congratulate Yonkers for Revitalizing Historic River

Target: Mayor Mike Spano, Governor George Pataki, and Governor Andrew Cuomo

Goal: Applaud decision to resurface and rejuvenate Saw Mill River

Over the past decade, authorities and environmentalists have been working together to resurface and rejuvenate the Saw Mill River in Yonkers, New York. The result has been spectacular: a clean river and a park construction in the works. The people of Yonkers must be commended for their dedication to renewing the life of the Saw Mill River.

The Saw Mill was one of the first areas to be developed in the original settlement of Yonkers. It used to flow freely through Yonkers until it was so polluted that it became necessary to have it channeled underground in the 1920s. Now, the river has been brought back to the surface (a process called “daylighting” by environmentalists) and recovery teams are working to clean up the Saw Mill area.

The daylighting process has been highly positive for the community of Yonkers, and not just in an environmental way. According to the Daily Green, “The daylighting project already has offered some economic relief via 200 construction jobs; projections suggest that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Eventually the park is expected to generate 1,000 permanent new jobs and a $5- to $6-million-dollar jump in revenues of local restaurants and businesses….Mayor Spano considers the daylighting project critical to achieving his vision of making Yonkers a tourist destination and mecca for new business. It also will provide substantial health benefits to residents, the environment and wildlife.” The Saw Mill River is one of many examples of how the environment directly relates to the health of humans and communities.

Dear Mayor Mike Spano, Governor George Pataki and Governor Andrew Cuomo,

I would like to offer my congratulations for the success of your restoration efforts of the Saw Mill River. Your work has helped to renew an important environmental staple in the community, and these actions are highly commendable. I approve of your actions and would life to encourage you to keep up the good work.

Not only have you reestablished the river, you have also created numerous jobs and greatly stimulated the economy. This is a shining example of how spending on public works can improve the lives in a community financially and improve the living conditions immensely. Congratulations on the success of your concerted efforts, and I hope you continue in this fashion for many years to come.
