Stop Cruel Physical Restraint of Students

Target: United States Senate

Goal: End the use of cruel physical restraint on students with mental disabilities

Students with mental disabilities have special requirements to be able to receive an education. However, many schools across the country physically restrain these students in order to keep control in the classroom. There have been numerous reports of injury and death as a result of these restraints. It is cruel punishment for the students who are only trying to seek an education.

There have been reports from multiple agencies, including the National Disability Rights Network, that show students as young as five years old have been injured by physical restraints. Reports include a seven- year-old autistic girl restrained for wiggling a loose tooth, and another seven-year-old girl fatally suffocated by her restraints, which were used as punishment for blowing bubbles in milk. These students are often restrained without parental consent. The reasoning for the restraint varies from threat of violence from the students to reasons as simple as showing disrespect to school staff. The students restrained almost always suffer from documented mental disabilities. As such, they often do not fully understand the reason for this punishment.

Restraining students is a cruel practice that should be stopped immediately. The Keeping Students Safe Act, introduced to the Senate, is designed to stop the use of restraint in any situation other than immediate threat of violence. Tell the Senate to support this bill today.

Dear U.S. Senate,

A bill has been introduced to you which will stop the use of physical restraint in schools. Mentally disabled students are often physically restrained as punishment, and these punishments have led to injury or death. Students are also often restrained without parental consent. The reasons for the restraints include actions as innocuous as wiggling a loose tooth or blowing bubbles in milk.

I ask you to support the Keeping Students Safe Act. This bill will protect the students from this cruel punishment. These students are not always able to understand why they are being punished, which makes these restraints even crueler to these students. Stop the use of restraints in school with no valid reason for their use.

  1. This is child abuse and murder. How could they explain to a parent how they killed their child. What has the school system turned into.

  2. Using restraints in schools only causes more of the behaviors that they’re trying to prevent by restraining.
