Stop Hiding Violent Torture

Target: Irwandi Yusuf, Governor of Aceh province

Goal: Stop trying to hide violent torture and instead bring it to an end.

After gay men in Indonesia were violently abused and flogged by authorities in the province of Aceh, the governor of that province has  attempted to hide the abuse. Floggings now take place out of the public eye, according to recent reports by Human Rights Watch.

Last year, well over 300 people were flogged in Aceh. However, the public flogging of two gay men earlier this year caused outrage. Flogging is a painful and barbaric form of torture in which the subject is lashed with a cane.

In 2017, no one should be tortured, especially not for their sexuality. This torture should not be hidden. It should instead be addressed and brought to a swift end. Sign the petition and demand that flogging be stopped.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Yusuf,

Now that authorities in your province have been called out for their violent punishments, like flogging, the torture continues. However, you have tried to hide it and keep it away from the public’s eye. However, such violence cannot be ignored.

Flogging is a barbaric form of punishment and completely unwarranted. I demand that you bring an end to this archaic form of punishment.

Sincerely,
