Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Stop federal raids on law-abiding medical marijuana centers in medical marijuana-approved states.
During President Obama’s 2008 campaign he promised to make marijuana use a low priority by not wasting government resources prosecuting medical marijuana cases in compassionate states. Despite his promise, federal raids continued and in 2009 the intent of raids was restated to only target businesses breaking state law. Unfortunately the numbers of unnecessary raids continues to rise, wasting taxpayer money and preventing patients’ safe accesses to medical cannabis. Please sign this petition and stop federal raids on law abiding medical marijuana centers in approved states.
In a 2009 memo now referred to as the “Holder memo,” Attorney General Eric Holder provided uniformed guidance to federal investigations in the medical marijuana industry. The memo states, “prosecution of commercial enterprises that unlawfully market and sell marijuana for profit continues to be an enforcement priority of the Department.” Despite this guidance, federal authorities continue to raid and close centers that are working within the laws provided by their state legislatures.
Currently, 17 states have compassionate cannabis laws; however, only a few have established a dispensary or Medical Marijuana Center (MMC) system to provide for patients. California is the pioneer, although it lacks the strict rules and regulations seen in Colorado, and has suffered most of the federal meddling. Backlash from activists, business owners, and patients has sparked concern from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. In a statement issued in May 2012, Pelosi expressed “strong concerns about the recent actions by the federal government that threaten the safe access of medicinal marijuana to alleviate the suffering of patients in California.”
Please sign this petition and urge President Obama to live up to his campaign promises, respect state law, and stop federal raids on clinics that adhere to state law.
Dear President Obama,
While on the campaign trail in 2008 you stated, “I’m not going to be using Justice Department resources to try and circumvent state laws on this [medical marijuana] issue.” After you took office, the Justice Department announced that they would allocate prosecutorial resources away from medical marijuana states; however, raids have continued and gotten worse in the last year. Please allow state officials to regulate the state approved use of medical marijuana for their citizens. It is a waste of money and resources for federal investigators to raid and close clinics that are not federally sanctioned.
As the number of raids increases and extends to reputable, established, and patient based, legally sanctioned clinics, you are preventing patients’ safe access to medicinal marijuana. By closing clinics that patients depend on, you are forcing people to look toward the black market for their doctor-recommended medicine. Please allow state authorities to regulate their voter approved agencies and save federal resources for more important matters.
