Target: United States Senate
Goal: Don’t allow people to carry guns without a permit in states that require permits
Recently, a bill has been introduced to the U.S. Senate which will change the current concealed weapons laws. Each state currently has its own laws on this issue, but this bill will allow more freedom to gun owners than some states allow. The bill will not standardize carrying laws as many have hoped, but instead will give people more freedom with guns than many places across the country feel should be allowed.
The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act will allow people to carry guns through states that require permits without a permit. The object of the bill is to let gun owners carry their weapons through states that would not normally allow them. However, if the bill passes, it will mean far more freedom for gun owners than many states want. Currently, not every state requires a minimum age limit or gun training before a person can own a gun. This bill will mean that each state must conform to the laws of another state when someone visits, which will render any harsher restrictions useless. States which have residents in favor of stricter gun control will have no choice but to allow visitors from other states to carry a concealed and loaded weapon without a permit.
This bill is intended to standardize concealed weapons laws, but it does not do so. Instead, it forces every state to comply with the least restrictive laws that exist. In fact, it will make it easier for a person to obtain and carry a gun in another state than in the state where they reside. This may result in an increase of crimes committed across state lines. Tell the Senate not to support this dangerous bill.
Dear United States Senate:
Recently, a bill has been introduced to you which is intended to standardize concealed weapons laws across the country. However, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act will only force states to comply with the least restrictive laws in the country. The bill will allow people to carry a concealed gun in a state where they are visiting without a permit if they are allowed to carry the weapon in their own state. This means that people visiting a state with residents in favor of more restrictive gun laws will be allowed to ignore that state’s laws if their own state has more relaxed laws.
I ask you not to support this bill. It will result in a loss of laws designed to protect people from gun violence. It will also mean the right of states to decide how best to protect their residents will be taken away. This may result in more gun violence across the country, and the loss of safety for many people. This bill is dangerous and should not be passed.
