Don’t Allow Catholic Hospitals and Universities to Deny Contraception to Employees

Target: United States Congress

Goal: Stop the attempts to deny contraceptive coverage to the employees of Catholic institutions.

Recently, Congressmen Ben Quayle and James Sensenbrenner introduced the “Religious Freedom Tax Repeal Act of 2012,” a bill that seeks to overthrow the progress of President Obama’s constitutionally defended health care mandate. This hazardous bill was crafted to reduce tax increases for employers of Catholic hospitals and universities that refuse to offer adequate health services to their employees. If passed, the bill would grant these religiously affiliated institutions the right to deny female employees insurance coverage for contraception without being penalized. This would be a misfortune to millions of working women.

To maintain a separation of church and state, religious groups should not be allowed to dictate what women choose to do with their health insurance benefits. Currently, many employees at religious institutions are non-Catholic, and the vast majority of Catholic women use contraception regularly. To deprive women of contraceptive coverage is a decision that the church can only make for its members. Any institution that receives federal income and employs secular individuals must adhere to the standard level of health care, covering all aspects of the mandate.

Despite the possibility of losing the Catholic vote in November, President Obama continues to stand against attempts to deny women coverage to necessary preventative health services. Sign this petition to stand with our President against those who seek to subvert the progress of health care. Don’t let Catholic institutions deny contraceptive coverage to women.

PETITION LETTER

Dear United States Congress,

I urge you to oppose religious pushbacks that deny women the right to preventative health services. The constitutionally defended Affordable Care Act requires this coverage, and religious groups should not have the power to take it away from its female employees. This is an affront to all working women. If this bill is passed, many will be forced to pay out of pocket for services that should be included through insurance mandated by the government.

Religious employers that refuse to provide birth control should be taxed, as they thwart the progress of the Affordable Care Act and attempt to mix their religion with government policy. All institutions that receive federal money must grant women the opportunity of this service.

Sincerely,
