Target: Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
Goal: Applaud Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the first Republican to publicly endorse gay marriage
Florida Republican Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen has become the first GOP sponsor of the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that would annul the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Perhaps the most pleasantly surprising fact is that the Representative’s support of gay marriage is not surfacing for the first time: “I voted against the constitutional amendment defining marriage [in 2006] so I’m pleased to cosponsor the repeal of DOMA and work with my colleagues on marriage equality,” the Reprentative said in a statement.
The Respect for Marriage Act’s mission is straightforward. According to lawmaker Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), “Far from harming the institution of marriage, [gay] couples have embraced this time-honored tradition and the serious legal duties of civil marriage. The Respect for Marriage Act will send this shameful law into the history books where it belongs.” On the other hand, the organization Senator Ros-Lehtinen now officially opposes, the Marriage Anti-Defamation Alliance, could not have more contracting values. Its mission statement reads: “No American should be afraid to exercise core civil rights: to speak, to donate, to organize, to sign petitions, or to vote for marriage as the union of husband and wife.” The Alliance, founded by notorious anti-gay hate group National Organization for Marriage (NOM), additionally offers support for “victims” of gay marriage.
It is relieving to know that there are still politicians in the world that put their personal and/or religious beliefs aside and fight for the rights of the citizens they represent, unlike the founders of NOM. Thank Representative Ros-Lehtinen for her brave actions and her support of marriage equality today.
Dear Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen,
I write to thank you for your support of same-sex marriage and for your dedication to ensure that every citizen has equal rights. In a nation that is plagued by many people that are unwilling to allow others to have different religious views, it is refreshing and relieving to hear that a politician puts her citizens’ rights before her personal beliefs.
The National Organization for Marriage is a very hateful anti-gay group, and it frightens me that they have gained a substantial amount of support. The Marriage Anti-Defamation Alliance, a chapter of NOM, is in turn a very homophobic organization that must be stopped. The idea that one can be a “victim” of same-sex marriage is appalling, and I applaud you for standing against the very idea.
I urge you to continue to support the Respect for Marriage Act and do everything in your power to help counter the National Organization for Marriage’s sabotage. Thank you for supporting the civil rights every citizen deserves regardless of sexual orientation.
