Save Baby With Rare Disease

Target: Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House of Representatives

Goal: Endorse a proposal to grant Charlie Gard and his family permanent residency in the U.S., so he can receive experimental treatment for a terminal disease.

Eleven month old Charlie Gard is suffering from from an inherited mitochondrial disease often referred to as “MDDS.” It’s terminal, and right now Charlie is on life support in a British hospital. His situation is extremely grim, with little hope in sight. However, two U.S. hospitals have offered Charlie an experimental MDDS treatment, with a slim chance of saving his life. There’s just one catch: Charlie may have to travel to the U.S. for an extended period – something that isn’t always as easy as it may seem.

However, two U.S. legislators have already proposed a bill that would grant Charlie and his family U.S. residency.

“Our bill will support Charlie’s parents’ right to choose what is best for their son, by making Charlie a lawful permanent resident in the U.S. in order for him to receive treatments that could save his life,” the congressmen said in a joint statement.

If you believe no child’s last chance at life should be impeded by borders, then please sign this petition calling on Congress to grant residency to Charlie and his family.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Speaker Ryan,

Two legislators have proposed a bill that might save the life of an 11 month old child. British born Charlie Gard has been offered an experimental treatment for his terminal, inherited mitochondrial disease. The problem is the treatment has been offered by two U.S. hospitals – meaning Charlie might have to travel to the U.S. Responding to this problem, Republican legislators Brad Wenstrup and Trent Franks have proposed a bill to grant Charlie and his family permanent U.S. residency, to give this child the best chance at life. We urge you to support this bill, and play a small part in saving the life of this innocent child.
