Target: Cardinal Timothy Dolan, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
Goal: Stop the Catholic Church from funding the anti-equality National Organization for Marriage
The Catholic Church supports the National Organization of Marriage, an organization which supports ‘traditional marriage’, meaning only heterosexual unions. The organization has had many controversial viewpoints. Recently, the organization’s strategy for fighting against equality was revealed, and shows the racist plan of encouraging people of color to oppose equality. This plan goes against the views of many American Catholics, yet the Church continues to donate to this organization.
Internal memos obtained from the National Organization of Marriage lay out its plan in no uncertain terms: ‘The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks—two key Democratic constituencies.” This is discriminatory against both LGBT people and people of color by treating them as if the two groups cannot overlap. It is especially harmful to these people when the basis of this treatment is not truly motivated by personal beliefs, but by political values. The groups are being split because they are largely Democrats.
The majority of Catholics in the United States do not agree with the National Organization of Marriage’s view on these groups. Lourdes Rodriguez-Nogues, president of LGBT Catholic organization Dignity USA, said of NOM’s plan, “A strategy that deliberately tries to divide families is shameful. Being a lesbian makes me no less Cuban that I was before I came out, no less Catholic, no less a part of my family.” The Catholic Church should do what is best for the church members, instead of focusing on political views. As many Catholics are LGBT or people of color, the Church’s supporting NOM directly hurts church members. Tell the Catholic Church to stop supporting and donating to the National Organization of Marriage.
Dear Cardinal Dolan,
The Catholic Church donates to the National Organization of Marriage, which is an organization with many controversial strategies and viewpoints. One of these recently revealed strategies is to divide LGBT people and people of color. This strategy discriminates against both groups, especially as the reason for diving them is because of the groups’ political affiliations.
I ask you to stop supporting and donating to the National Organization of Marriage. Its strategies harm many Americans, including many Catholics. Supporting this organization will do nothing to support American Catholics, and will in fact harm many members of the church.
