Stop the Dangerous Overuse of Antibiotics for Livestock

antibiotics in livestock

Target: U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Goal: Issue mandatory standards for antibiotic use in livestock to keep our food sources safe.

The everyday overuse of antibiotics in livestock is breeding new strains of resistant bacteria, posing a grave threat to public health. Though the FDA recognizes this fact, it recently issued a disappointing set of rules that allows factory farms to continue overusing antibiotics by making compliance completely voluntary. Tell the FDA to issue mandatory standards for antibiotic use to keep us healthy and our food safe.

Meat producers began using antibiotics 35 years ago to compensate for extreme overcrowding and unsanitary conditions in factory farms. Antibiotics not only served as an “easy” way to prevent sickness amidst the filth, they also served as growth stimulants. Without any laws dictating management, the use of antibiotics gained popularity quickly, leading to awful consequences today.

Presently in the U.S., a full 80% of antibiotics are used on livestock. These huge dosages are causing new strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria to gain strength, reducing the effectiveness of antibiotics in general. The E. Coli strain alone killed 30 people in Europe last year, and MRSA, a type of staph infection, now kills more people in the U.S. every year than AIDS.

Despite these appalling statistics, powerful agriculture giants and the veterinary pharmaceutical industry have been avoiding strict regulations for years. Now the problem is becoming absolutely urgent.

Sign the petition below to urge the FDA to pass mandatory standards for the use of antibiotics in livestock except in cases of illness.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear FDA Administrator Margaret Hamburg,

I am extremely disappointed to learn that the FDA has issued new rules that allow factory farms to continue to overuse antibiotics. Although the rules state that antibiotics should not be used as growth stimulant, they still allow for continued preventative use by making compliance totally voluntary. This condition creates a dangerous loophole that allows even those voluntarily complying with the law to maintain unsafe conditions in farms and overuse antibiotics for disease prevention.

As the FDA has previously stated, the everyday overuse of antibiotics in livestock is breeding new strains of resistant bacteria, posing a grave threat to public health. Presently in the U.S., a full 80% of antibiotics are used on livestock. This huge dosage is causing new strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria to gain strength, reducing the effectiveness of antibiotics in general. Of these mutant forms of bacteria, the E. Coli strain alone killed 30 people in Europe last year, and MRSA, a type of staph infection, now kills more people in the U.S. every year than AIDS.

These appalling statistics show how urgent the problem is becoming. I urge you to pass mandatory standards for the use of antibiotics in livestock except in cases of illness. It is your duty to promote public health, and in this case, that means issuing strict regulations that will preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics for all of us.

Sincerely,

Our food and our animals must be protected!

  3. As a medical professional, it is scientific fact that misuse of antibiotics can and does produce more virulent strains of bacteria rendering various antibiotics useless in the treatment of previously curable diseases…

  4. I can’t sign because you only refer human health and not animal welfare. The selfish human being must stop facing animals as mere objects or food!

  5. I agree Patricia. Animals are not objects. They do feel pain like the human animal. Factory Farms are dens of torture. I hope this comes back to haunt the FDA. Unfortunately many people will die because they allow the overuse of antibiotics.

    • True, but it’s a lot more than just the antibiotics…hormones of growth are causing myomas and ovarian cysts in teenagers (when myomas were a thing of post-menopause condition) it is causing cancers (breast too). Do you refer that at the petition? the petition should state as a demand the free range method or eco. method, just removing the antibiotics is not much…

  6. I will sign your petition now but I really think you could do some editing.
