End Government Obstruction of Children’s Climate Lawsuit

Target: Jeff Sessions, Attorney General, Department of Justice

Goal: Ensure federal government supplies legally mandated documents in children’s climate change lawsuit.

21 children have filed a lawsuit against the federal government for its decades-long failure to address climate change. A judge has ordered that the case will go to trial despite aggressive resistance from the Justice Department.

The suit alleges that the children’s constitutional right to a sustainable environment has been violated by government subsidization of greenhouse gas emitting fossil fuel interests. Future climate impacts as projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change appear to support this conclusion. A child reaching middle adulthood in the 2040s will likely have grown accustomed to extremely hot summer days, rapidly encroaching coastlines and an expanded storm season.

Justice Department lawyers have attempted unsuccessfully to kill the lawsuit through significant legal wrangling. This includes filing motions aimed at blocking access to critical documents, requests for dismissal and finally a last gasp petition to have the trial authorization reviewed by an appeals court. Legal experts writing in the Washington Post state that this hail-mary appeal is very likely to be rejected.

Children who stand to suffer most from the effects of climate change deserve their day in court. Please sign the below petition demanding the Justice Department end its futile attempts at obstruction.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Attorney General Sessions,

I am writing to demand that the Justice Department end its increasingly desperate attempt to prevent the Children’s Climate lawsuit from going to trial. Motions to withhold critical documents from the plaintiffs, outright dismissal and appeal have all been flatly rejected. Further delay tactics are nothing more than a waste of tax payer money. Those most at-risk from future climate change impacts deserve their day in court.

Sincerely,

thats not fair to children worldwide who need help!

  2. The Department of Justice seems to be obstructing justice. Such corruption at high levels should be investigated and prosecuted – but by whom?
