Goal: Delete “Heterosexual Awareness Month” Facebook page.
In the year 2000, the month of June was officially declared LGBT History Month in the United States to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of LGBTQ citizens to America’s history. Obviously, there is no such month officially dedicated to straight history, but earlier this summer a Facebook page appeared declaring July to be “Heterosexual Awareness Month.” Since its creation, the group has posted nothing but mockery and hate speech towards the LGBTQ community. Posting such statuses as “I’m straight and I’m Proud of it! Live with it!” and “Gay culture doesn’t fixate on commitment. Monogamy is not their bag”, the group has been remonstrated and reported multiple times by Facebook users for its bigotry, but it continues to exist nonetheless.
Facebook’s policies take a clear stance against discrimination based on sexuality, and their options for reporting a page due to hate speech include targeting based on gender or orientation. The page, which has existed since June 5th, has been reported many times since then, but it has not yet been deleted by Facebook. Do not allow this hateful, harmful speech to be tolerated an instant longer. Demand Facebook delete the “Heterosexual Awareness Month” page immediately.
Since June 5th, a fan page has existed on Facebook calling itself “Heterosexual Awareness Month.” The statuses posted by this page, its comments on those statuses, its photos, likes, and info page all indicate a severely bigoted anti-gay perspective. Hate speech, such as appears on this page, is always harmful and should not be tolerated either online or in person. As Facebook policy allows for deletion of a page based on orientation-related hate speech, and as multiple reports of the page have gone through, there is no reason the page should be allowed to exist for a moment longer.
As a website with an excellent history of standing up for its LGBTQ users, and as a website that considers itself to be family-friendly, I am confident that you will make the right choice and delete the “Heterosexual Awareness Month” fan page immediately. This kind of bigotry and mockery has the potential to seriously harm those who see and experience it, and it cannot be allowed to continue.
