Do Not Force Women to Notify Men Before Having an Abortion

Target: Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson

Goal: Overturn bill that would make it illegal for a woman to have an abortion without notifying her family and the man who impregnated her, even if she was raped or abused.

Women now need permission from men in order to have an abortion in Arkansas, even when the man in question is her rapist or abuser. H.B. 1566, the bill that recently passed, is a provision under the Arkansas Final Disposition Rights Act of 2009, which concerns the body of a deceased person and requires family members to agree upon what to do with the remains. Fetal tissue will now be considered a deceased person, meaning that a woman must tell whoever impregnated her if she plans on having an abortion, and that she will not be able to have the procedure if the man does not agree.

This is a huge setback for women’s rights and bodily autonomy. It is a violation of civil rights in any case, made all the worse for the fact that it does not make any exceptions. A woman must inform her abuser or even her rapist in order to get an abortion. If she is under 18, she has no say at all, and the decision is left to her guardians. Doctors would risk losing their license by performing an abortion without the consent of a man. And if the man does not agree with a woman’s choice, even if she takes the matter to court, the time that takes could be enough to prevent the abortion because of Arkansas’s strict and narrow time window. Sign below to demand that women’s rights be respected and protected, and this bill overturned.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Hutchinson,

H.B. 1566 is a clear violation of the rights of women. Requiring a woman to inform the man who impregnated her before having an abortion, even when that man is her abuser or rapist, is a huge setback that denies women the rights to their own bodies.

The bill’s main outcome is that it puts more barriers between a woman and her doctor, making it harder for women to access basic health care. This is unacceptable and must be remedied. I urge you to overturn H.B. 1566 and stand up for the basic rights of women.

Sincerely,

  2. Not signing this petition as I am against abortion.
I do agree, though, that a rapist or abuser by his very act of rape or abuse has forfeited all his rights.
But in the normal case of a pregnancy, the man is the father of the child and should have equal say in the future of the child, including being able to stop his own child from being violently murdered in an abortion if he chooses.
