Target: Michael R. Little, District Attorney, Liberty County, Texas
Goal: Prosecute owner that allowed his pit bulls to attack a defenseless pony.
On July 9, 2012, three pit bulls owned by Lachain Dever of Dayton, Texas brutally attacked and mauled a Shetland pony that was chained to a fence post on the property. Witnesses to the attack told deputies on the scene that Dever was present and saw the attack but did not attempt to control the dogs. Dever was still standing by watching the savage attack when deputies arrived. It was only when the police threatened to shoot the animals that Dever walked to his dogs, pulled them from the pony and returned them to their chains in the yard.
The pony, that had been critically wounded, was later euthanized as a result of the injuries and the dogs were taken to quarantine at a local veterinary hospital. Dever was taken in to police custody and police returned to the scene to continue the investigation. While there, they discovered a second horse that was emaciated and appearing to be in poor health. Officials believe that Dever is the owner of all of the animals at the location.
Devers failure to act to prevent further harm to the defenseless pony was a gross act of animal cruelty but the circumstances which led to the attack are nothing short of willful neglect. Ponies and horses are not meant to be confined to a four foot circle and that is exactly how the animal was kept. It had no means of escaping the attack as it was chained to a fence post.
This was not the first time the dogs had been aggressive, according to neighbors, yet Dever allowed them to run free, outside his control, with other animals present. These facts, in addition to the fact that at least one other emaciated animal is present on the property, should be enough to demand that prosecutors’ seek the maximum fine and jail time allowable under the law.
Dear Michael R. Little, District Attorney, Liberty County, Texas
The dog on pony attack that took place on July 9, 2012 at the home of Lachain Devers is a horrible example of animal cruelty and abuse. Mr. Devers refusal to act to prevent further harm to the pony further proves that he took no responsibility for the care, control, or well being of his animals.
We know that the three pit bulls involved in this attack will likely lose their lives as the result of them acting on their natural instincts and urge you to hold Mr. Devers accountable for the deaths of these animals and the pony in his care as it was his irresponsible ownership of the animals that set the these events in motion.
Please take a stand against animal cruelty and ask for the maximum allowable sentence for animal credulity in the case of Mr. Devers.
