Trump: Explain Conflicting Accounts of Putin Meeting

Target: President Donald Trump

Goal: Explain conflicting accounts of your meeting with Vladimir Putin.

Donald Trump may have undermined several US intelligence agencies by accepting Vladimir Putin’s claim that Russia did not meddle in the 2016 presidential election. Trump and Putin recently met in person, and reports from the US and Russia regarding the meeting are very different.

Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, says that Trump “accepted” that Russia did not interfere in the election. Lavrov told Reuters, “U.S. President Trump said that he heard firm assertions from Russian President Putin that it is not true and that Russian authorities have not meddled in the elections. [Trump] said that he accepts these assertions. That’s it.” However, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reported that Trump began the meeting by confronting Putin over election meddling and continued to press the issue despite Putin’s denials.

These conflicting reports about such a serious issue are very concerning. If Donald Trump did in fact accept Putin’s denial, he undermined several United States intelligence agencies that have said definitively that Russia interfered with the 2016 election. Add your name to the petition below to demand that the president clarify what happened in this meeting.

Dear President Trump,

You recently met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, and there are conflicting accounts of how you handled the 2016 election meddling issue in that meeting. While Rex Tillerson claims that you confronted Putin about Russia’s interference in the election, Sergey Lavrov said in a statement that you “accepted” Putin’s denial of any Russian interference.

If you did in fact accept this denial, then you undermined several United States intelligence agencies on the international stage. I demand that you clarify what happened during your discussion of Russia’s interference in the election.
