Applaud Decision to Increase Protected Shrew Lands

ID-10084967

Target:  US Fish and Wildlife Service

Goal: Praise decision to protect more habitat of the Buena Vista Lake ornate shrew

The US Fish and Wildlife Service is taking action to increase the amount of protected habitat for the Buena Vista Lake ornate shrew. The Buena Vista Lake ornate shrew is one of the most endangered mammals on Earth, and needs human protection to prevent its extinction. The US Fish and Wildlife Service should be commended for its efforts to help the shrew survive.

The Buena Vista Lake ornate shrew is a small mammal that traditionally inhabits wetlands, and in 2002 it was believed only thirty mammals were left in existence. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, “In the former times it inhabited nearly 1 million acres of wetlands and riparian forests… Of the 57,000 acres of potential shrew habitat that are left, most fragments are too small and isolated to support shrew populations. ” The new increase in land protection will allow for more than five thousand acres to be classified as critical habitat.

The Buena Vista Lake ornate shrew was one one of the most prominent creatures to live in the Central Valley of California. The protection of its habitat will allow not only for the restoration of the shrew population, but will also allow for the other creatures living there to flourish as well. The US Fish and Wildlife Service is making a good stride to aid the Central Valley’s ecosystem.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear US Fish and Wildlife Service,

Recently you have decided to increase the amount of land designated as protected critical habitat for the Buena Vista Lake ornate shrew. I would like to commend you on this decision, as it will prove essential in the preservation of this species. Thank you for taking action to protect the Buena Vista Lake ornate shrew.

I am sure I don’t have to explain to the significant impact the extinction of a species can have on an ecosystem. By protecting their habitats, the shrew may have a chance to rebound as a species and restore the wetland ecosystem of the Central Valley back to normal. The protection of its habitat will allow not only for the restoration of the shrew population, but will also allow for the other creatures living there to flourish as well. I approve of your decision to establish these critical habitats and renew the ecosystem.

Sincerely,
