Oppose Missouri Minimum Wage Decrease

Target: Eric Greitens, Governor of Missouri

Goal: Do not allow St. Louis minimum wage to fall by more than two dollars per hour.

Minimum-wage workers in Missouri will soon face a pay decrease of more than two dollars an hour. Republican lawmakers have lowered the minimum wage in St. Louis from $10 per hour to $7.70, the state’s standard minimum wage.

The St. Louis minimum wage was raised to $10 per hour in 2015, and it was due to be increased again in 2018, but the state legislature (with a GOP majority) has passed a bill that nullifies the raise and prohibits cities from raising their wages above the state standard.

Governor Eric Greitens has announced that he will allow this new bill to become law, which will result in some workers facing a 23% decrease in their earnings. Add your name to the petition below to oppose this harmful legislation.

Dear Governor Greitens,

Republicans in your state legislature recently passed a bill that nullifies the St. Louis $10 per hour minimum wage and forbids cities from raising their wage above the state standard of $7.70 per hour. You’ve announced that you plan to allow this bill to become law, thereby forcing many workers in St. Louis to face a 23% decrease in their wages.

While some economic concerns about minimum wage increases are valid, allowing the minimum-wage workers of St. Louis to see their wages fall by more than two dollars per hour is an extreme and damaging move. I urge you to reconsider your decision, which will put undue economic strain on citizens in St. Louis and all over Missouri.

Wages should be increasing, NOT decreasing. The costs of living only move in one direction and wages should move in the same direction as well.
