Stop The Suffering Of Carriage Horses

Target: Bill de Blasio, Mayor of New York City

Goal: Ban horse carriages on New York City streets.

Horses made to pull carriage rides in the streets of New York are in constant agony. These animals are forced to navigate dangerous traffic, despite being very skittish animals. They are made to work in stifling heat or extreme cold; horses have died from exhaustion due to the former. They breathe in dangerous fumes and exhaust from cars and buses.

The push to end horse carriages has been going since 2013, when current mayor Bill de Blasio promised to do away with this practice on “day one,” only to fail to do so throughout his entire term. A compromise to reduce the number of horse carriages was attempted in 2016, only to fall through when the union representing carriage drivers protested it.

We cannot let horses continue to be abused like this. The animal rights group NYCLASS has launched a new campaign showing the physical and psychological damage that is done to the horses forced to pull carriages through crowded streets. Sign this petition to demand the city take heed and stop the suffering of these animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mayor de Blasio,

Carriage horses in your city are forced to navigate dangerous traffic in unfriendly weather conditions. Many have died from heat exhaustion, and others become ill from breathing in heavy exhaust fumes from vehicles. Unfortunately, these problems have been ignored for decades in favor of romanticizing horse-drawn carriage rides for the people of the city.

Animal rights groups have been pushing to end horse carriages for years, and were highly disappointed by your failure to do so yourself as promised. A new ad campaign has highlighted the dangers to the horses, but that is only the beginning. You must take an active role in reducing or outright banning the use of carriage horses in your city. Horses are not protected by the Federal Animal Welfare Act, so it is up to the city to be mindful of their well-being.

Stop the suffering of innocent horses. They deserve better than to be forced through dangerous streets in unfriendly conditions.

Sincerely,

  1. This is so barbaric and cruel to the poor horses.
The mayor should follow through with his promise to stop this, immediately. Who cares what the union representing carriage drivers thinks?! They are animal abusers! They should be prosecuted for animal cruelty.

Horses DO NOT belong on asphalt streets and in traffic.
I have seen two horrific accidents where the horses had to
euthanized due to their horrific injuries. Anyone who
loves these beautiful animals would NEVER drive these
carriages. Only a cruel and heartless individual would do
    this!

I have worked a horse drawn carriage business for many years in the uk. Our horses are fit and happy and only work April to November during the season. Our horses have regular days off and are monitored by our council very closely. Our horses are only allowed to work 7 hours at the most in any one day. We must carry feed for our horses and the council have supplied water feeders all over the town. I think the horses in New York require strict guide lines and rules to follow. Forced working hours for the horses. Annual holiday and rest breaks for the horses. If it is so hot why don’t the ranks the carriages are on have shade covers to shade from the heat. If working in cold they should have adequate rugs. Our horses have everything they need from covered shaded ranks which also protect from rain. The rules should be put in place to help protect the animals safety and welfare. Come on New York if ur not going to ban these carriages then strict guide lines and rules must be applied.

  4. YOU CAN TELL JUST BY LOOKING AT THE PICTURE OF THIS POOR HORSE IN THE PHOTO!!!!! YOU CAN SEE THE SUFFERING IN IT’S FACE!!!! THIS POOR ANIMAL IS OVERWORKED, PROBABLY DOESN’T EVEN GET A DAY OFF. THIS IS THE LOOK OF EXHAUSTION, NEGLECT, LOOKS LIKE HE’S GOING TO KEEL OVER!!!
CATCH A FRIGGIN TAXI OR A BUS OR MAYBE EVEN WALK UR OWN FUCKING LAZY ASS!!!!! ALL YOU MORONS THAT ARE WORKING THESE POOR HORSES TO DEATH!!!!
