Target: Human Rights Watch
Goal: Support Human Rights Watch in the fight against hate crimes in Greece
For the past decade, Greece has acted as a sort of European gateway for many migrants and asylum seekers coming from Asia and Africa. The large number of immigrants has sadly fostered a state of xenophobia that has spread throughout major cities like Athens, where the majority of racially motivated attacks occur. Fueled by the economic crisis and far-right, extremist sentiments, many self-proclaimed vigilantes have resorted to their own means of violent justice to express their hatred for immigrants.
Many asylum seekers or undocumented migrants fail to report these crimes because they fear arrest or deportation. Those that do report however, cite beatings, stabbings, and other horrific forms of violence that no one is immune to. At least two pregnant women reported being assaulted. Another woman had her hand torn open by motorcycle thugs who swung at her with a bat embedded with nails.
The far-right Golden Dawn party may be responsible for part of this anti-immigrant attitude. The party seeks to take aggressive action against immigrants, even calling them ‘sub-humans, with no conscience, country, or culture.’ Clearly this party, deemed neo-Nazi by some, is only serving to instigate and spark more racially-based attacks. There has even been a call for land mines to be installed near the border.
Human Rights Watch has called for action, urging authorities to create a national strategy to combat these race-related crimes. This strategy will include better training for police officers, combined with new terrorist surveillance methods. Also of importance is a public condemnation of this climate of intolerance. Further information can be read in their report.
Thugs and gangs should not be allowed to take the law into their own hands through the use of vigilante violence. Sign this petition to show the Human Rights Watch that you support their fight against these violent hate crimes occurring in Greece. We need to speak up now if anything is to be done about this inhospitable environment.
Dear Human Rights Watch,
I want to show my support for your fight against the widespread hate crimes and violence against migrants and asylum seekers in Greece. I wasn’t aware of how serious the problem was, but after learning more about the information published in your recent report, I recognize that this is something that the world must voice opposition to.
I support your suggestion to create a better national strategy that would include better police training and surveillance of terrorist groups. These attackers must be brought to justice and should no longer be allowed to enforce their own form of hateful justice. Greece should not be an inhospitable place for the many immigrants that take refuge there. This climate of intolerance is unacceptable and I would like to express my public condemnation of these hate crimes.
