Eagles Shot and Killed at Bird Sanctuary Deserve Justice

Target: Barry Hughes, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Wales, United Kingdom

Goal: Seek the maximum possible penalty for the attacker who allegedly shot two eagles at a bird sanctuary.

Two eagles were found dead at a bird sanctuary in Ebbw Vale in Wales after a volunteer stumbled across their carcasses during scheduled feeding. The birds had been shot multiple times, including one who was shot in the head. The birds’ attacker is still unknown and must be brought to justice for this senseless crime against these threatened birds of prey.

The owners of the Festival Valley Owl Sanctuary suspect that the eagles were targeted specifically by the gunman or gunmen responsible. The pair — a steppe eagle and an African tawny eagle — were the largest and among the most impressive birds in their care. It is believed that their attacker scaled the walls surrounding the facility and passed a number of other birds in order to select and kill the eagles.

This tragic case is not the only recent instance of wildlife being shot and killed at zoos or sanctuaries where they should have been kept safe from poachers or abuse. Earlier this year, a rhinoceros was shot at a French zoo, allegedly for its horn. While the reasons behind the eagles’ killing is not yet known, it is possible that the attacker in this case could have had similar motivations.

As poachers grow more desperate to kill endangered wildlife, attacks at sanctuaries such as this one in Wales may become increasingly common, and as such, must be severely punished to discourage potential copycats. Sign this petition to demand that once this gunman is found that they be given the maximum penalties and fines allowed by law.

Dear Mr. Hughes,

Two eagles were recently found shot to death at a bird sanctuary in Ebbw Vale. The eagles had been shot multiple times each, including one with a severe gunshot wound to the head. It appears likely that these birds were specifically targeted, as the culprit would have had to bypass many other birds held in the facility in order to find and shoot the eagles, who were the largest birds held at the wildlife sanctuary.

This act of savagery must not go unpunished. We demand that the person, or persons, responsible for these senseless killings receive the maximum penalties allowed under the law when they are found.

  1. Alison Zacharis says:

Until we humans learn to respect all living things, this appalling barbarity will continue. The first step to a kinder direction must start with our meal plate and until we can see and are touched by the despicable cruelty and hellish suffering each piece of meat represents, we will never have true compassion for our fellow creatures.

  2. These eagles were in a sanctuary, where they should have been safe. Punishing the(se) miscreant(s) as far as the law allows will send the message that this deliberate cruelty will not be tolerated!

  3. OMG…………….HUMANS CAN BE SO VILE,DISGUSTING AND SADISTIC. Whoever did this must be caught and severely punished. This monster is so greedy and vile that he killed these majestic birds for no reason and took them from the rest of us.

Someone knows who did this and must tell the authorities so they can be severely punished.
