Don’t Prevent Facebook From Telling Users Who Are Under Investigation

Target: U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions

Goal: Eliminate gag order on Facebook and protect the freedom of speech guaranteed in the First Amendment.

The United States government is infringing on the First Amendment and Americans’ right to free speech. The government, conducting an investigation, has placed a gag order on Facebook as it uses individuals’ Facebook accounts as evidence.

Facebook would like to notify the individuals whose accounts are under investigation. However, the government has forbid the social media company of doing so, silencing it with a gag order.

Even more alarming, this investigation may be into individuals who were arrested for protesting Donald Trump at his inauguration. If this is true, the individuals who were doing nothing but demonstrating their freedom of assembly deserve to be notified. Demand that the government drop its gag order against Facebook.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Sessions,

The United States government is infringing on the First Amendment. In its ongoing investigation into several U.S. citizens, it has placed a gag order on Facebook, forbidding the company from warning its users that their social content is being investigated.

These citizens deserve to know that warrants are out for their social media content. They should not be left in the dark as to why they are being investigated. I demand that you use your influence as Attorney General to make sure the gag order on Facebook is dropped, and allow the company to use its free speech and notify users who are under investigation. Doing so will not only protect the company’s free speech, but the free speech of the individuals in question.

Sincerely,
