Close Aging, Damaged Great Lakes Pipeline

Target: Al Monaco, Chief Executive Officer, Enbridge Inc.

Goal: Retire aging oil pipeline which lies exposed below Lake Heron and Lake Michigan.

The Republican Attorney General for Michigan has called for closure of a 64 year-old pipeline which lies exposed in the Strait of Mackinac between Lake Heron and Lake Michigan. Normal wear and tear has removed an outer layer critical for maintaining structural integrity. 29 leaks have already been documented over the pipeline’s operational history.

Pipeline owner Enbridge Inc has presided over some of the most costly and damaging pipeline failures in the United States. This includes a rupture which allowed nearly 1 million gallons of tar sands oil to spill into the Kalamazoo River. The resulting five-year clean-up effort was the costliest in American history with authorities citing erosion in the protective outer layer as a primary cause for the spill.

The Great Lakes are a drinking water source for over 35 million people. We cannot afford to risk public safety through continued operation of a damaged, aging pipeline. Please sign the below petition calling on Enbridge to end its use.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Monaco,

I am writing to urge that you close the Line 5 pipeline lying between Lake Heron and Lake Michigan in the Strait of Mackinac. As you are aware wear and tear has removed the protective outer layer which helps maintain structural integrity. A flaw in this layer was identified as contributing to the Kalamazoo  River spill which caused significant ecological damage and cost your company over $1 billion.

The Great Lakes are a primary drinking water sources for over 35 million people. Please protect ecological and public health, in addition to Enbridge, by discontinuing transportation of oil in the Line 5 pipeline.

Sincerely,

  1. Thank you to the Attorney General for Michigan who has called for the closure of this pipeline. Someone in government with actual integrity.
Yes, please close this horrible Enbridge pipeline before another disaster can occur.
