Target: Mayor Gallus Strobel
Goal: Remove the women-only parking spots in Triberg, Germany’s new parking garage.
Gallus Strobel, the mayor of Triberg, Germany, has recently designated twelve parking spots in the city’s new parking garage for women only. He claims that these spots have easy access and are well-lit. He has also designated two spots for men, which have tighter clearance around concrete supports and must be approached from an angle.
Strobel defends his decisions, claiming that it is not a dig at women drivers and was meant to just start a conversation, but many people are already angered by his comments and vow to test their driving skills in the just-for-men spots. Statistically, men are more likely to die in car accidents than women and are ticketed at a higher rate, at least in one American study, and the fact that the spaces in the new parking garage are well-lit does little in Strobel’s defense.
If Strobel intends to make the parking garage safer for women, he would do better to make the entire garage well-lit, rather than designate twelve spots for women only. Sign the petition below, and ask Mayor Strobel to retract his comments, remove the men- and women-only spots, and make the entire garage safe for everyone.
Mayor Gallus Stroble,
While your intention in declaring twelve parking spots in Triberg’s new parking garage for women only was to incite a little conversation, you have, consciously or subconsciously, made women feel inferior to men. Years of “women are bad drivers” jokes have done nothing to improve the general public’s opinion of women, and your statements have further opened them up to gender discrimination.
Studies have shown that men are just as capable as women, if not more, of getting into auto accidents and receiving traffic citations. You intended to start a conversation, but it has done little to promote your city’s attractions.
I am asking you to retract your comments, and remove the gender discrimination your new parking garage presents. Make the parking garage safe for everyone to drive in, and please don’t try to make things easy for women drivers. Your attempts have only made things harder for them.
