Success: Methane Emissions Remain Regulated

Target: David Tatel, Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit

Goal: Applaud court finding that Trump Administration may not delay implementation of rule aimed at reducing methane pollution.

Harmful methane emissions will remain regulated after a United States Court of Appeals struck down a Trump Administration attempt to deregulate. This comes despite an aggressive effort by Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt to roll back Obama-era climate policies. A growing movement in defiance of these actions has taken the form of marches, lawsuits and ForceChange petitions such as this one.

Adopted by the Obama Administration in 2016, the rule establishes strict limits on methane emissions from oil and gas wells. Methane traps 100 times more heat than carbon dioxide and is a primary driver of global warming. In reaction to a strong anti-climate agenda touted by the new administration, several states including California have instituted policies to significantly reduce future methane emissions.

Courts represent a critical last line of defense against the Trump administration’s erosion of environmental protections. Please sign the below petition praising their judicial independence.

Dear Judge Tatel,

I am writing to praise your commitment to judicial independence in striking down the Trump administration’s attempt to delay methane emission regulations. At a tipping point for combating climate change, when the Republican party controls two branches of government, the courts are a critical last line of environmental defense. Please continue prioritizing the rule of law over political consideration.
