Don’t Shut Down Independent Press

Target: Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar’s foreign minister

Goal: Don’t silence international news organization Al-Jazeera.

Al-Jazeera, the popular international news organization based in Qatar, may be silenced and shut down for good. Several Middle Eastern nations, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, are threatening to cut all diplomatic ties with Qatar unless the government shutters the prominent media organization.

Al-Jazeera has long been lauded as a leading, independent source of news in the Middle East. It has brought important news, such as the Arab Spring and other uprisings, to Western attention. It is seen as a revolutionary news organization and one of the first free media outlets in the area.

To shutter Al-Jazeera and silence it would rob the Middle East and the rest of the world of a free and independent source of news. In addition, shutting down Al-Jazeera would force Qatar to lose a piece of its sovereignty to Saudi Arabia. There is no telling what else the larger nation may demand of Qatar. Sign the petition and demand that Qatar not give into the demands of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations and keep Al-Jazeera open.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani,

Qatar will soon decide whether to shutter the renowned and revolutionary Al-Jazeera news network for good. To close Al-Jazeera and silence its broadcasts would rob the Middle East, and the rest of the world, of an important news organization that has changed the way events in the Middle East are covered.

I ask that your government not give into the demands of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and other nations. By keeping Al-Jazeera as your independent media outlet, Qatar will be keeping  piece of its sovereignty as well.

Sincerely,

  1. Gen Lovyet Agustsson says:

    thats not fair!

  2. That the hugely oppressive regimes of Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and two other countries, should demand that Qatar close it’s news agencies, including Al Jazeera, is an absolute outrage and a serious attack on freedom of speech.
I agree with the petitioner about the integrity of Al Jazeera. Al Jazeera employs many excellent journalists who do a fantastic job covering news, producing investigative reports, documentaries and exposees. They cover many issues that other news agencies are hesitant to cover, such as the scandal of the Canadian government’s abuse and murders of First Nations children in residential schools, the underground ivory trade in Asia, and many other issues.
If they succeed in forcing Qatar to close down this and other news agencies, it will be a very very sad day for the world.
Maybe a petition to the leaders of these 4 offending countries would be in order as well, to show them that the world is watching, and doesn’t like what they are doing.
