Stop Federal Contractors from Discriminating Against LGBT Employees

Goal: Prevent federal contractors from discriminating against LGBT employees.

Shockingly, it is legal for 29 states to fire or refuse to hire people based on their sexual orientation.  While federal legislation to prevent anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) discrimination is currently hard to move, there is another option to protect Americans from being unfairly cast aside.  By issuing an executive order on federal contractors, the President would be able to prohibit sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination while sending a message of inclusiveness to Congress.

According to the Williams Institute, an executive order would extend LGBT-inclusive employment to 16 million of the more than 20 percent of Americans employed by federal contractors.  It is unfair that a federal statute addressing employment discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity cannot gain support due to our economic climate.  It is equally unfair for us to sit by and wait while individuals are struggling to gain employment, lead a candid work life, and are entitled to the same rights as any capable employee.

Support for equal opportunity employment in the federal sector is evidenced by a Human Rights Campaign poll taken in November 2011.  The poll demonstrated that 73 percent of Americans support the executive order outlined above.  The poll also showed that support for equal job opportunities for the LGBT community has risen nearly 40 percent since the 1980’s.

By signing the petition below, you are showing your support for an executive order preventing discrimination based on a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.  I urge you to sign the petition, spread the word and support America’s workforce.


Dear President Obama,

Anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employee practices are currently legal in 29 states of our country.  Unfortunately, due to our economic climate and congestion in Congress, federal statutes to prevent this discrimination cannot move through to law.  While we wait for federal officials to work out their current issues, I implore you to take action by enacting an executive order to prohibit discriminatory employment practices by federal contractors.

An executive order extending LGBT-inclusive employment would provide security, opportunity, and fair employment practices to the 20 percent of Americans employed by federal contractors.  I am urging you to use your executive power to do the right thing and provide equal opportunities to all Americans, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.  Not only would you be supporting the rights of Americans, but you would also be sending a message of inclusiveness to Congress for the future.

A recent poll by the Human Rights Campaign showed that 73 percent of Americans support an executive order barring discrimination against LGBT employees by federal contractors.  Please provide fair opportunities to the LGBT community by enacting this executive order and preventing employment discrimination amongst federal contractors.
