Stop ‘Corrective Rape’ in South Africa

“Corrective rape” is a phrase used to describe the act of a man raping a lesbian with the purported intent of turning her into a heterosexual. This horrific practice is particularly widespread in South Africa, especially in that country’s “townships.”

While increased media attention lately has shone a spot light on this crime, the government of South Africa still does little to halt this crime or punish the perpetrators.

The South African justice system continually releases those accused of corrective rape out on little or no bail an drags their feet brining court cases against the suspects. While the accused are free in the world, the victims often face harassment and new threats from their attackers.

According to statistics, more than 10 lesbians are raped in Cape Town alone, every single week. And over 150 women are raped every day in South Africa. However, for every 25 men accused of rape, 24 walk free.

To help bring an end to this barbaric practice, sign the petition below calling on the South African government to prosecute rapists and to declare “corrective rape” a hate crime.

Petition text:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am deeply concerned about the practice of “corrective rape” in South Africa. Gay people deserve the same protections and rights under the law that heterosexual people enjoy. Until South Africa actively enforces its laws against rape, and makes “corrective rape” a hate crime, justice cannot be served.

As a result, I strongly request that you recognize rape based on sexual orientation as a “hate crime.” Additionally, you must enforce the laws against rape and hold those guilty of the crime accountable to justice.

Sincerely,
