NRA Must Speak Out Against Shooting of Philando Castile

Target: Pete Brownell, President of the National Rifle Association (NRA)

Goal: Defend the Second Amendment rights of people of color equally, and speak out against the killing of Philando Castile.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) claims to protect the Second Amendment right of American citizens to bear arms, but has remained notably silent regarding the alleged killing of a law-abiding citizen of color simply for exercising that right. This is a shameful indication of racism on the part of the NRA; as Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman said in a speech and later tweeted, “If the @NRA isn’t here to protect law abiding gun owners like #PhilandoCastile, then who are they here to protect?”

Philando Castile was reportedly killed by a police officer after being pulled over in his car with his girlfriend and her 4-year-old daughter. Castile was asked for his license and registration, and dashcam video and audio shows he calmly informed the officer that he was legally carrying a firearm for which he was licensed. The officer, Jeronimo Yanez, allegedly shot Castile 7 times, and testified that he feared for his life when Castile reached into his pocket. Yamez was acquitted for this senseless murder, and still the NRA has nothing to say. Demand that the NRA defend the rights of black men as staunchly as those of white men, and speak out against the killing of Philando Castile and the acquittal of his killer.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Brownell,

The NRA claims to be an organization that defends the rights of American citizens, but it seems to be unfairly selective about whose rights it defends. Philando Castile was a law-abiding citizen, peacefully exercising his Second Amendment right to legally carry a firearm, and was allegedly brutally killed for it.

The accused police officer has been found ‘not guilty’ on all three charges he faced in relation to the shooting. He allegedly shot Castile because Castile was a black man who was armed, even though Castile did nothing wrong and even took the step of informing the officer that the gun was there, and that it was legal. It is unacceptable that the NRA has not seen fit to make any sort of statement about this, when Castile’s rights were so clearly violated. I urge you to defend the rights of people of color just as staunchly as those of the rest of the country, and to break the NRA’s silence about Philando Castile.

Sincerely,

This was a police matter. Why should the NRA get involved? Philando Castile wasn’t exactly a model citizen and shouldn’t have been licensed to carry in the first place. In the police dashcam, he was repeatedly told not to touch the gun in his lap and he disobeyed. He put the child in danger by his actions. There’s a selfie video of his girlfriend calmly narrating the situation as if it were a documentary; isn’t that a strange thing to do under the circumstances, a bit calculating? Stop playing the race card and stirring up a race war; color has nothing to do with this. The NRA is not responsible for every controversial shooting in the US.
