Stop Child Marriages in America

Target: Kathy Hochul, Lieutenant Governor of New York

Goal: Demand New York strengthen its anti-child marriage laws to protect young girls.

New York’s recent ban on child marriage does not protect girls. Loopholes exist that can still force girls as young as 14 to marry; these include religious beliefs, familial traditions or pregnancy. Girls who marry before the age of 18 are more likely to face domestic violence, and they do not have legal access to domestic abuse support services or shelters.

New York is one of the most influential states in this country, so it is a harsh blow to realize that their views on child marriage are on the same level as the backwoods in the 1930s. Even developing countries, which have been seen as “less enlightened” than America, have a better understanding of why the legal marrying age should be 18.

We cannot let such an influential state continue to hold such outdated and harmful views on child marriage. Young girls need to be protected from the risks that come with marrying young. Sign this petition to demand that New York improve its anti-child marriage laws.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Lieutenant Governor Hochul,

New York’s ban on child marriages does not protect young girls, who are more likely to suffer domestic abuse and other complications that come with marrying and possibly becoming pregnant before the age of 18. Worse, these girls do not have access to the same support that adult victims of domestic abuse have — shelters are forced to turn them away simply because they are minors.

This is not acceptable. New York is one of the most influential states in the country, but the state’s overall views on child marriage are disturbingly close to the level of the backwoods 1930s. Too many families are able to abuse loopholes in the law to forcibly marry off their young teenage daughters, and these girls are not protected by the law and seldom allowed to say no.

Please change and improve the child marriage ban to protect young girls. Ban marriage before the age of 18, so that no more teenage girls are forced to endure the painful complications of young marriages, or the risk of domestic abuse.

Sincerely,

So we sanction pedophelia? This is absolutely disgusting that this happens anywhere much less in our country. That we would have to petition this to stop is ridiculous.

  2. Czerny A. says:

New Yorkers support tolerance for oppressive foreign cultures, so don’t expect any help from them. They’re afraid that taking a stand against a foreign tradition will make them racists and Islamophobes, so they will stay mute in the face of nymphophilia, female genital mutilation, honor-killings. They’ve lost their sense of right and wrong.

    • Again – the singling out of Islam. And it’s not just foreign cultures that are doing this. Totally North American religions are doing this, such as Mormonism. This is cross-cultural and mainly religious (as far as I know).
Forced child marriage is done by Christians – including Catholics, Muslims – as you say, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Unification Church and others.
And genital mutilation is not just done to females, but is done to males as well, sometimes at the tender age of 8 days old.

  3. This is the problem with all these Muslims and other sick newcomers to the country, they are so different to the majority of Americans and all the western world. They should NOT be allowed to practice their sick cultures in their new country. We don’t marry children like they do and to me it is a very sick thing to do.To us this is called child abuse and you will be put in prison as you should be.Young girls should be allowed to be children not have to marry some sick, perverted man who any western woman would vomit just at the thought of being anywhere near him..These sick men and the families that allow this to happen should be put in prison and the child should be never allowed to go back to them.
