Tell Ohio Mayors to Support Marriage Equality

Target: Mayors Association of Ohio

Goal: Join the Freedom to Marry movement to protect the rights of same-sex couples

A number of Ohio mayors have joined the Freedom to Marry movement, which is organized by a group of mayors across the country to show their support for marriage equality. The group works to recognize same-sex marriages on both the state and national level, as well as change public opinion so the majority supports marriage equality. These Ohio mayors now joining the group represent many major cities, including Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland.

By joining Freedom to Marry, these mayors are pledging their support to bringing marriage equality to their cities as well as across the country. A statement released by the chairs of Freedom to Marry pointed out that these mayors’ cities “derive great strength from their diversity, and gay and lesbian families are a crucial part.” These mayors are doing the right thing by supporting a cause in which they believe strongly, and showing their support publicly. Other mayors across Ohio should be encouraged to join them. However, anti-equality groups are pressuring these mayors not to pledge their support. According to the anti-equality organization Citizens for Community Values, “Ohio does not need to redefine marriage. It needs the support to uphold traditional marriage and family, sanctity of life, and religious freedom.”

Ohio mayors need to support marriage equality, and statements from anti-equality organizations should be ignored. Supporting marriage equality will allow cities across Ohio and the United States to celebrate the diversity they “derive strength from.” Tell Ohio mayors not to listen to anti-equality organizations and instead pledge their support for marriage equality.

Dear Mayors Association of Ohio:

Recently, a number of you have joined the Freedom to Marry movement, and publically pledged your support for marriage equality. You have demonstrated a positive effort to promote marriage equality and change public perception of same-sex marriage. However, anti-equality groups are asking you to stop giving your support to this cause.

I ask those of you who have not already pledged your support for marriage equality to do so. Marriage equality means equal rights for all Americans as well as more diversity in cities. The groups lobbying against marriage equality are attempting to suppress the rights of some Americans, and do not have valid reasons for doing so. Do not listen to these groups, and instead pledge support for marriage equality.
