Demand Brazilian President Resign Over Corruption Allegations

Target: Michel Temer, President of Brazil

Goal: Demand President Temer step down, and call new elections.

For the first time in Brazil’s history, a sitting president has been charged with a crime. In a scathing indictment delivered to the country’s supreme court, Brazil’s public prosecutor accused President Michel Temer of taking millions of dollars in bribes, and of having “fooled Brazilian citizens.”

Temer himself has denied similar allegations in the past, this is the first time prosecutors have officially made charges against him — or any other sitting Brazilian head of state. The irony is that Temer only managed to come to power in the first place after his predecessor Dilma Rousseff was impeached in August 2016.

Unlike Temer, Rousseff herself was never charged with any crime; rather her impeachment was largely tied to her handling of the economy and her scandal-ridden Workers’ Party. “The result of the 2016 coup: leaving the country in the hands of the only president indicted for corruption,” Rousseff has stated.

Even aside from the corruption charges, Temer has failed to deliver the political and economic stability he promised Brazilians. Sign this petition to send a message to Temer: it’s high time he step down.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Michel Temer,

Barely a year into your presidency, you managed to secure the dubious title of first sitting Brazilian president to be charged with corruption. Along with accusing you of taking millions in bribes, the prosecution has accused you of having “fooled Brazilian citizens.”

Putting aside the charges, it’s hard to disagree that many Brazilians certainly feel taken advantage of and treated like fools. You came to power with promises of a cleaner government, stronger economy and a better Brazil. So far, you seem to have failed to deliver on all counts.

The endless parade of corruption scandals continue, while the economy remains anemic and country struggles to hold itself together. For these reasons alone, it’s clear it’s time for you to resign. Brazil needs a government the people can have confidence in; not a grim sideshow of bureaucratic bickering and failed policies. Please resign and allow Brazilian citizens to elect a fair leader.

Sincerely,
