Stop Racist Vandalism

Target: Tricia J. Harbour, Director of the Mississippi Crime Stoppers Division

Goal: Stop the racially-motivated defacement of monuments in Mississippi.

A monument to Emmett Till was defaced by vandals recently, the latest in a growing string of racially-motivated vandalism. The graves of two civil rights workers have also been defiled, and another monument to Till has been attacked in the past. According to news reports, the vandals see the monuments to civil rights as “reverse discrimination, a threat to their own well-being.”

This attitude, in addition to the acts of vandalism themselves, is extremely dangerous. The past several years have already seen many black men and boys murdered by white people who thought them dangerous solely based on their skin color, and the defilement of monuments to important black people is only strengthening these erroneous beliefs. The Emmett Till monument’s vandalism is especially harsh, due to the horrifying circumstances in which Till died solely for addressing a white woman.

Such dangerous racism cannot be tolerated. The law must put a stop to such behavior and attitudes; this includes finding and punishing the vandals as soon as possible, and enforcing stronger protections against future incidents like this one. Sign this petition to stop racist vandalism of monuments to black people.

Dear Director Harbour,

Racially-motivated vandals attacked a monument to Emmett Till, and the graves of two civil rights workers have been vandalized in the past as well. All of these incidents are motivated by a common belief among some people in your state that civil rights is “reverse discrimination,” a thinly-veiled sentiment of racism. This is an extremely dangerous attitude, especially in the midst of the current political climate and in the wake of many black men and boys being murdered by white people who want to feel “safe.”

You must find the vandals immediately and punish them to the full extent of the law. Furthermore, you must protect monuments to Till and other important black figures from future attacks of racist vandalism. These kinds of attitudes are dangerous and reprehensible, and they must no longer be tolerated.
