Do Not Prevent Immigrants from Receiving Welfare

Target: President Donald Trump

Goal: Do not bar immigrants and their families from receiving welfare for five years after arriving in the U.S.

President Trump is calling for stricter immigration laws which would bar all legal immigrants from receiving public assistance like welfare for a period of at least five years. This would build on the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996–a law whose provisions were rolled back substantially during the administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama–which allows the deportation of immigrants who become public defendants within five years of entering the U.S. Trump’s proposal would tighten regulations like this and make certain types of federal assistance completely off-limits to immigrants.

Currently, the decision as to who is eligible for local public assistance programs lies with the state. Not only would this change, but Trump’s proposal would also broaden the definition of what makes someone a “public charge,” and those deemed likely to become a “public charge” within five years of arriving would be prevented from entering the country in the first place. This is a prejudiced and discriminatory act, and a clear violation of human rights. Sign below to demand that Trump withdraw this proposal.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Trump,

The plan to ban immigrants from receiving any kind of public assistance within five years of entering the United States is a discriminatory violation of human rights. There are many nuances and varying circumstances that immigrant families must contend with that are completely disregarded by this proposal.

America is a nation of immigrants, and a nation of equal rights. Preventing people from entering the country based solely on the possibility that they might need public assistance within five years of arriving in the country defies the American dream that our country was founded on. I urge you not to bar immigrants from receiving any kind of welfare.

Sincerely,
