Rebuild Memorial for Murdered Muslim Teen That Was Set on Fire

Target: Muriel Bowser, Mayor of Washington, D.C.

Goal: Rebuild the memorial for murdered teen Nabra Hassanen that was set on fire and destroyed.

A teenager was murdered outside a Virginia mosque, and her memorial in Dupont Circle was set on fire and destroyed. Police say 24-year-old Jonathon Soloman was arrested for setting the fire, and that he set ablaze several other items in the park as well, so he was not necessarily targeting the memorial. He is being charged with vandalism.

The memorial was for 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen, who was walking to a mosque with her friends during Ramadan when she was murdered. One of the teens in the group became engaged in an argument with a man in a car. The man then proceeded to get out of his car, chase the teens with a baseball bat, and attack Nabra. Her body was found in a pond after a second assault — the man hit her with the bat and then brought her in his car to another location where he assaulted her again before her death. The violent destruction of her memorial is another completely undeserved blow to her family and friends. Sign below to demand the replacement of Nabra’s memorial.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mayor Bowser,

The murder of Nabra Hassanen was a tragedy, as is the destruction of her memorial. The latter can, and should, be remedied.

Nabra Hassanen was 17 years old when she was brutally murdered on her way to a mosque during Ramadan. Whether or not her memorial was being targeted specifically when it was set on fire and destroyed, it must be replaced in her remembrance. I urge you to ensure that the city replaces the destroyed memorial to Nabra Hassanen.

Sincerely,

  1. This memorial should be rebuilt. The racism against innocent Muslims must be stopped.
