Target: Governments worldwide

Goal: Phase out fossil fuel subsidies in place of energy efficient strategies

The recent United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development hosted a discussion titled ‘Breaking Down Political Barriers to Fossil Fuel Subsidy Reform’. Organized by various stakeholders including the governments of Switzerland and New Zealand, as well as the heads of various international organizations, the event focused on how to enact political reform in the area of fossil fuel subsidization, and support the renewable energy sector. Historically, fossil fuel subsidy reform has been difficult because of the power of the fossil fuel industry and the monopoly of the oil companies. However, if reform isn’t achieved, the global economic crisis will continue and sustainable development will fail, according to Mark Halle, Director of the International Institute for Sustainable Development. Event organizers agreed that fossil fuel subsidies need to be phased out, coinciding with the implementation of energy efficient strategies. Their discussion should be supported, and all heads of state should actively engage in phasing out fossil fuel subsidies in favor of investment in renewable energy.

A variety of strategies were suggested on how reform should take place. It was agreed that governments must have clear and transparent plans, there must be strong lines of communication, anti-corruption strategies must be put in place, and reform must be coupled with investment in renewable energy, transportation, and job creation. Reform is extremely important today because subsidies are not serving the purpose originally intended, which was to alleviate poverty. Instead, subsidies are benefitting the middle and upper classes.

Ultimately, reform of any kind must be accompanied by a strong commitment from all those involved. Based on discussions at Rio+20, there is international consensus about the need for fossil fuel subsidy reform; now we must urge governments to act. By signing this petition, you are asking heads of state to implement plans to phase out fossil fuel subsidies, while simultaneously phasing in energy efficient strategies.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Heads of State,

Recent discussions at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development undermine the need for fossil fuel subsidy reform, specifically the phasing out of subsidies, while phasing in energy efficient strategies. Although the fossil fuel and oil industries are powerful, action must be taken now if the global climate change and economic crises are to be overcome. Take advantage of the current international consensus about the need for fossil fuel subsidy reform and begin the phasing out of subsidies while investing in renewable energy, transportation, and job creation.

Strategies to implement reform include: clear and transparent plans, communication, anti-corruption measures, and the coupling of reform with energy efficient strategies. Subsidies were meant to alleviate poverty; however, they no longer serve that purpose. Instead, subsidies benefit the middle and upper classes, while those in need remain in need.

Please support the global population as well as the environment by implementing plans to phase out fossil fuel subsidies, while simultaneously phasing in energy efficient strategies.

Sincerely,
