White House: Stop Restricting Press Access

Target: Sean Spicer, White House Press Secretary and Acting White House Communications Director

Goal: Stop restricting press access in the Trump White House.

The Trump White House is increasing its restrictions on the press, holding fewer public press briefings and taking fewer questions when briefings do happen. Traditionally, the White House has held daily briefings, in which the press secretary briefs reporters and takes questions on camera. Under the Trump administration, Press Secretary Sean Spicer has held sporadic briefings and barred certain media outlets from attending “private” briefings.

A recent briefing was not televised or audio-recorded. Jim Acosta, the White House correspondent for CNN, pointed out the unprecedented nature of this aversion to the press, saying, “It just feels like we’re sort of slowly but surely being dragged into a new normal in this country where the president of the United States is allowed to insulate himself from answering hard questions.”

With a president who has a history of unapologetically lying to the public, and an administration that is reluctant to admit when the president lies, press access in the White House is more important than ever. Add your name to the petition below to demand that the Trump White House stop restricting media access.

Dear Secretary Spicer,

In recent weeks, you’ve given very few public press briefings, taken fewer questions from reporters, and generally restricted media access in the White House. One of your recent briefings was conducted without any video or audio recording, which is in stark contrast to the daily, on-camera White House briefings that are the norm in American politics.

The Trump administration includes a number of people who are currently under investigation, and Donald Trump is a known unapologetic liar. Considering these extreme circumstances, journalists need access to the goings-on in the White House more than they ever have. I demand that as White House Press Secretary, you conduct regular public briefings, allowing the White House Press Corps to do its job and keep the American people informed.
