Stop U.S. Bombings of Civilians in Iraq and Syria

Target: James Mattis, Defense Secretary, United States

Goal: End indiscriminate bombing of urban centers by U.S. coalition forces in Iraq and Syria which has resulted in hundreds of civilian casualties.

The United States government has acknowledged at least 480 civilians were killed by coalition airstrikes in Iraq and Syria through the first five months of 2017. Human rights organizations estimate the civilian death toll may be as high as 4,000. This represents a Trump Administration strategy to combat ISIS, which has led to increased bombing campaigns in crowded urban centers.

A presidential desire for headline grabbing airstrikes paired with a general lack of oversight has increasingly compromised civilian safety. Over 200 civilians were killed when a 500-pound bomb was dropped on a suspected ISIS stronghold in the major Iraqi city of Mosul. The United States is no longer publicly reporting when their own planes kill civilians, instead classifying all deaths as caused by “coalition” forces. An independent review process of combat operations utilized by previous administrations has not been implemented.

Indiscriminate killing of civilians is undermining the United States’ reputation as a morally guided power in the eyes of the world. Worldwide news outlets have been quick to point out that U.S. coalition airstrikes were responsible for more civilian deaths in Syria than ISIS for several months in 2017. The Trump Administration and military officials have been united in their unwillingness to consider a change of strategy or enhanced oversight in response.

America cannot hope to defeat ISIS through mass civilian casualty campaigns which only strengthen the Islamic State’s anti-Western message in the Middle East. Please sign the below petition calling for expanded oversight and an end to bombings in heavily populated urban centers.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Mattis,

I am writing to advocate for the end of large-scale bombing campaigns in densely populated urban areas in Iraq and Syria. As you are aware coalition airstrikes have been responsible for at least 484 civilian casualties through only the first five months of 2017. This includes over 200 civilian deaths from a single strike in Mosul.

We cannot hope to defeat ISIS if our policy or lack of oversight results in the indiscriminate killing of civilians. Please demonstrate America’s commitment to protecting non-combatants by advocating for an end to airstrikes in city centers.

Sincerely,

  1. The illusion that the US is a “morally guided power” dissolved a long time ago in the eyes of most of the world. Most of the world recognizes America for what it is – a warmonger and brutalizer.
Americans, Canadians and others who still persist in believing the illusion – or delusion – that the American government has any “morality”, need to educate themselves. They need to start reading/watching news sources from around the world, to find out what others think of America and it’s actions.
America’s indiscriminate killing of huge numbers of innocent civilians in Syria and Iraq is unconscionable and inexcusable. They should get out of these countries. They are no better than ISIS.

  2. BAN THE BOMBING OF THESE PEOPLE NOW.
