Investigate Suspected Muslim Murderer for Hate Crimes

Target: Colonel Edwin C. Roessler Jr. Chief of Fairfax County Police, Virginia

Goal: Investigate the murder of Nabra Hassanen as a possible hate crime.

Seventeen-year-old Nabra Hassanen had just left her mosque when she was allegedly kidnapped, killed and later dumped in a pond. This horrific event has shaken the Muslim community of Fairfax, Virginia, with her family members arguing Hassanen was targeted for religion.

“I think it had to do with the way she was dressed and the fact that she’s Muslim,” Hassanen’s mother, Sawsan Gazzar told The Washington Post.

Fairfax police have already arrested and charged a 22-year-old man, Darwin Martinez Torres, on suspicion of murder. Strangely though, police have been quick to downplay the possibility that this could have been a hate crime.

“We are NOT investigating this murder as a hate crime,” the department tweeted. This may seem pretty shocking, especially given the massive increase in hate crimes targeting Muslims over the past year.

Sadly, we live in a country where Muslims are all too often the targets of discrimination, hatred and violence. It’s time the Fairfax Police Department recognize this grim reality, and investigate Hassanen’s killing as a possible hate crime.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Colonel Roessler,

The United States is in the grip of an Islamophobia epidemic. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center’s 2016 hate census, last year saw the number of anti-Muslim hate groups nationwide triple, while a Pew study found the level of bias-related violence aimed at Muslims today is roughly the same as it was in the wake of 9/11. Amid this surge of Islamophobia, it’s shocking to hear Fairfax police aren’t investigating the alleged kidnap and murder of Nabra Hassanen as a possible hate crime. She reportedly went missing after leaving a mosque, and her family members say they think her killing was related to her religion.

Given the current climate of hatred, her family is well justified in their suspicions, and it’s imperative for police to consider the possibility that this might be yet another example of anti-Muslim violence. Do the right thing, step up to the plate, and investigate Hassanen’s killing as a hate crime.

Sincerely,

    This is a HATE crime!
Anyone who targets any race or religion is a terrorist and should be treated as one to the full extent of the law.
The murder of ANY human being is unacceptable and this was a child who didn’t stand a chance!

  2. I’m curious as to why the police have already decided that this does not warrant investigation as a hate crime. How do they know unless they have first investigated it??
Who are they being influenced by in this decision? Something seems not right here.

browns killing browns are just racist hate crimes!
