Stop Protecting For-Profit Colleges

Target: Betsy DeVos, Secretary of Education

Goal: Do not allow for-profit colleges to take advantage of students.

American students have lost protections against for-profit colleges. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has put Obama-era rules on hold while the Department of Education reworks them, but in the meantime, students are more vulnerable to for-profit colleges committing potential fraud.

Many have called this rule delay illegal. Senator Elizabeth Warren said in a tweet, “Secretary DeVos made it nearly impossible for students cheated by #4profit schools to ever get out from under their massive debt burdens.”

The “gainful employment rule” on hold makes sure that colleges prepare students to get well-paying jobs and be able to pay back student loans. The “borrower defense to repayment” rule, also on hold, protects against predatory lending. Both of these rules are incredibly important for college students, and pausing these protections while the rules are revamped is unnecessary and dangerous. Add your name to the petition below to demand that the Department of Education continue protecting students rather than for-profit colleges.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary DeVos,

Your department recently put two important Obama-era rules on hold that protect students against for-profit colleges and predatory lending practices. This move has opened up American students to being taken advantage of by for-profit universities that could commit fraud.

There is no reason these rules should not stay in place while they are reworked by the Department of Education. Your decision has made it easier for these schools to take advantage of students and burden them with greater debt. I strongly urge you to reconsider this hold and emphasize protecting students, not for-profit schools.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

  1. Bill Mosso says:

    Secretary DeVos,
Someone needs to advocate for the folks who were sold a bill of goods. That person could be you.
The students and taxpayers believed the words of disengenuous people who down throgh the years have proven that all else was to take a back seat to the profit motive. Education as you know should never be treated as just another commodity bought and sold in the marketplace.
    Thanks, Bill

  3. Paulette Mirfield says:

“For profit” says it all. It is not for education. It is only for profit. So many have been discredited and students, who were sold a bill of goods, are stuck with a exorbitant bill and no diploma. Kind of like a pyramid scheme.

  4. Robert Burns says:

She couldn’t care less about student debt or this petition because she’s been appointed to her position and serves at the whim of the idiot in the WH.
